Illinois Beach State Park
Polluted with Microscopic Tremolite Asbestos Fibers
Illinois Beach State Park
contains visible asbestos debris and microscopic asbestos fibers that have been washing onshore for decades. This was documented in a report prepared in June, 2003 by Jeffery C. Camplin, CSP, CPEA, Safety, Health, and Asbestos Expert, for the Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society. The report, now referred to as "
The Camplin Report
," forced the Illinois Attorney General to form an Asbestos Task Force in July, 2003 to allegedly look into the report's serious charges. This was documented in the December 2004 issue of Concious Choice magazine. There are no valid public health risk assessments that evaluate airborne asbestos exposure to visitors to the Park. Nearly two million families visit this park each year. Now, the state of Illinois and USEPA have found that one of the most toxic forms of asbestos, TREMOLITE, is present in beach sand in a non-peer reviewed, draft report released in June, 2005. First, the state of Illinois claimed it was safe in 1998 for children to play in this deadly pollution based on now outdated science and biased sampling protocols. Now we also find that the science does not support the state's latest 2005 conclusions that the asbestos polluted beaches are safe as the state deceptively claims. The State of Illinois claims that our shorelines do not pose a risk to human health from asbestos contamination. THIS IS WRONG! But why would the state of Illinois downplay the extent and danger of asbestos pollution on our shorelines? Why would they act like a polluter acts? The answer is: BECAUSE THE STATE OF ILLINOIS IS A MAJOR POLLUTER AND SOURCE OF ASBESTOS CONTAMINATION along the Illinois Lake Michigan Shoreline. Click here to get the real story of poor asbestos decisions made by the state of Illinois and their attempts to cover them up.

Outdated 2000 Public Health Assessment Challenged! The state of Illinois continues to rely upon an old, outdated, and biased June, 2000 Public Health Assessment (PHA) that was performed by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and reviewed by the Centers for Disease Control (ATSDR Chicago office). Jeffery C. Camplin, CSP, CPEA challenged the validity of the science used in this PHA on July 20, 2005 to the ATSDR. After several delays, the ATSDR and Centers for Disease Control provided a response to the information challenge. On December 6, 2005, Chief Science Officer for the CDC, Dixie Schneider, amazingly denied the challenge. This embarrassing and misleading denial by the CDC was immediately responded to by Mr. Camplin in a blistering appeal letter sent to ATSDR, CDC and the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Mike Leavit. Mr. Camplin and the citizens of Illinois now await a proper response from the CDC and ATSDR.Back to Index Waukegan Area Major Source of Asbestos Contamination into Lake Sites along the Waukegan-Lake Michigan Shoreline appear to be major contributors to the microscopic and visible asbestos contamination. Documents reveal these sources of asbestos have contributed massive quantities of visible and microscopic asbestos being spread from the Wisconsin-Illinois down to Oak Street Beach in Chicago.
WatchDog has found at least 3 sources of TREMOLITE asbestos in Waukegan. Stay tuned for the soon to be published discovery on how this toxic mineral ended up throughout the Illinois Lake Michigan shoreline. Back to Index
CLICK HERE TOLEARN HOW LOCAL, STATE, AND FEDERAL OFFICIALS WERE INFORMED AND WARNED Story of Asbestos Beach Presented at National Environmental Conference Asbestos expert Jeffery C. Camplin CSP, CPEA, and author of the 2003 "Camplin Report" on asbestos pollution at Illinois Beach State Park presented at the Environmental Information Association (EIA) national conference in Mesa, Arizona on March 27, 2006. The hour and a half presentation was well attended by national asbestos experts, asbestos contractors, environmental professionals, and USEPA officials. A shocking powerpoint presentation depicted the asbestos cover-up by local, state and federal officials. Mr. Camplin was kept nearly twenty minutes after the presentation answering questions. Michael Beard of Research Triangle Institute immediately invited Mr. Camplin to speak at the 2008 ASTM Asbestos Conference and present an update on this ongoing asbestos saga. Stay tuned for future presentations on Asbestos Beach by Mr. Camplin.
